Target shooter aims for PB
Three avid target shooters turned out on Saturday at the Mossman District Rifle Club, for a 500 Metre Double Range competition.
The range was like an indoor shooting gallery with perfect conditions, and Norbert Schmidt (top left) was the first on the 500 mound shooting in the F Class (bipod, telescoped 308) comp.
Schmidt opened with a bullseye and a super bullseye, then went on to squeeze off a string of 6’s in fast succession, recording a final score of 58/3 from a possible 60.
Neil Attwood (middle left) was the next competitor on the mound, shooting in the Full Bore (manually supported, open sights) comp. Atwood opened with a 5 and a 4 and then squeezed off a mixed bag of 4’s and 5’s to give him a score of 46 from a possible 50 in the 10-shot match.
Ron Schild (bottom left) was the last competitor. Schild opened with a 5 and a 4, then pulled a mixed bag of shots, including a super V Bull, to give him a first range score of 44/2.
For his second 500 metre range, Schmidt opened with a 5 and a 6. Cutting them, he went on to shoot a solid second range, dropping only 2 points to give him a score of 64/3 from a possible 66.
Attwood opened his second range with a 4 and a bullseye. He cut the 4, and went on to shoot an impressive second range score of 54/2 from 55.
Schild, back on the range in the Full Bore Comp, opened with 4’s, then continued to pull a mixed bag of shots to score 48/1 in his final 500 metre range.
Congratulations go to Neil Attwood, for breaking the 100-point drought; the first time he has achieved a score of 100/2 from a possible 105 in the Full bore comp.
Second prize honours went to followed by Ron Schild, with 92/3 .
In third place was Norbert Schmidt, with a final tally of 122/6 from a possible 126 in the F Class Comp.
Anyone interested in this precision sport is encouraged to visit the Club and try their hand and eye. The Club can provide a rifle and ammunition for newcomers. The Range is situated ½ way between Port Douglas and Mossman on the Cook Highway, and shoots on Saturdays at 1pm.
