Port locals have always thought architect Charles Wright was among the best in the business, and now there's awards to prove it.

Projects by Mr. Wright and his Macrossan Street business, Charles Wright Architects, won three Far North Queensland Regional Architecture Awards, including House of the Year.

Fifteen building projects competed in commercial, heritage, interior, public, residential, small project architecture and urban design categories, with the honours announced at Pullman Reef Casino in Cairns.

Mr. Wright's ‘Glass House' won the top residential prize, with the project described by the jury as "an experiment in sampling the modernist principals of Phillip Johnson’s icon and melding it with a contemporary mode of living in the tropics. It is an adventurous move by both architect and client.

"Its brave approach is matched and revealed by an exquisite use of detail and material. It is a striking contribution to the lexicon of tropical architecture," the jury noted.

The jury also awarded 'Glass House' a regional commendation in the Residential Architecture - Houses category, and Mr. Wright's 'ReNewell House' won the Small Project Architecture prize.

'ReNewell House', an Executive Retreats holiday home featured in the current issue of Port Douglas Magazine, is a beachfront property at Newell Beach, fifteen minutes north of Port.

Mr. Wright and his winning projects will progress to the Queensland Architecture Awards, to be announced in Brisbane on June 21.
