Local students for a plastic free paradise
Local primary students from Port Douglas State School are doing their part to spread the message about the harmful effects of plastic bags on marine life as part of the Think Outside the Bag project.
The Think Outside the Bag project is being run by the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre in partnership with local organisations; Tangaroa Blue and the Douglas Shire Sustainability Group. The aim of the project is to reduce use of plastic shopping bags.
During the past school term, Reef Guardian students from Port Douglas State School have been learning about the harmful effects of plastic bags and other marine debris, which are affecting their community.
With the help from their teacher, Doug Barnes, these students have created amazing posters relating to this issue.
“The Reef Guardian representatives of the school were very enthusiastic to assist the community by raising awareness of the negatives associated with plastic bags and hope to see Port Douglas a plastic bag free zone in the future,” Mr Barnes said.
Everyone is encouraged to go and view this wonderful art installation at the Port Douglas Community Centre Kiosk on Mowbray Street until the end of May.
