Investigations continue into Daintree death
UPDATED Wed 11.30am
Mossman Detectives have spoken to the man who was believed to be a passenger in the vehicle on the night of incident. The man came forward to help with Police investigations.
INITIAL REPORT
A number of questions remain unanswered as investigations continue into what caused the death of a Mossman man who drove off the Daintree Ferry early on Tuesday morning.
In a press conference held yesterday afternoon in Cairns, Senior Constable Heidi Marek told reporters the white Toyota Camry was recovered with the man's body still inside.
"At this stage the information is that it (the car) was off the front of the ferry, and we believe it was about 30 metres from the (southern) end, where it touches land."
She added that while Forensic Crash Investigators are continuing their work, "We wouldn't call it (the cause) suspicious."
As of yesterday afternoon, police were still wanting to talk to the male passenger of the vehicle who accompanied the 62 year-old driver on his ferry trip north at 8.30pm the previous evening.
"We certainly would be encouraging him to come forward, and also perhaps anyone who may have seen the driver or the passenger in the Daintree area between these times (8.30pm - 12.20am)," Senior Constable Marek said.
It is believed the car involved was the only car on the ferry at the time of the incident. There has been no indication at this stage that the driver had alcohol in his system.
If you have any information regarding the movements of the two men prior to the crash, please contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or call Mossman Police on 07 4098 2177.
