ANZAC spirit stronger than ever

Hundreds of people have commemorated our past and present ANZACs by attending services around the Douglas region.

An estimated 300 to 400 people stood in the darkness of the dawn service at Mossman yesterday morning, and, as always, the haunting sound of The Last Post was an emotional highlight of proceedings.

Wreaths were laid in silent prayer for those who gave their lives for their country.

In Port Douglas, ANZAC Park once again drew record numbers, with many spilling out onto Macrossan Street to take in the service. In bright sunshine with a cooling and welcome breeze, young children and aging veterans stood side-by-side to pay their respects.

It has been almost 100 years since the Gallipoli landing, and if the ANZAC spirit continues to be held in such high regard, its second century could be even stronger than its first.
