New spa opens on the QT

QT Resort Port Douglas opened the newly refurbished spaQ last night in front of a suitably relaxed crowd.

Group spaQ designer and development and operations manager, Naomi Gregory, Spa Manager Hayley Close, and Resort GM Steve Oakley hosted the champagne reception complete with excellent canapés prepared by their Bazaar Restaurant and grill chef and his team.

A large, specially invited guest list attended and were shown through the new, professionally designed facilities and ran through all the therapies and treatments available.

spaQ facilities include five spacious treatment rooms with one dedicated to couples, a reception and retail area, full facility male and female change rooms and a relaxation lounge.

The menu features four different massages, a range of facials and body treatments by USpa, an Accessories section with a creative range of 30-minute add-on treatments, organic sunless tanning and four ‘Signature’ packages - including The Weekend Warrior and The Plush Princess.

Adding to the relaxation experience, spaQ Port Douglas will serve La Gaia teas, including an exclusive spaQ blend, served in quirky, mismatched cups. Snug sheepskin rugs adorn the relaxation lounge chairs and the team is decked out in light and bright yellow and red bamboo-print uniforms.

"It has been fantastic to be involved with QT and their SpaQ program, they are such a creative organisation," said Ms Gregory, who was celebrating her 30th Spa opening.

"This venue will add a new dimension to the FNQ spa terrain giving a fresh twist to the designer spa concept."

The organisers believe the key to the success of this new spaQ experience is that, uniquely, they don't make you select which treatment you want in advance.  You simply reserve your time and then, with the help of your therapist, you can choose a treatment experience when you arrive.  Of course, you can book a treatment in advance if you prefer.

SpaQ manager Hayley Close said "The salon offers refreshments, cool tunes and a vibrant look and with the help of natural spa product creator Uspa, our mission is to help you shine!"

Resort GM Steve Oakley closed proceedings by thanking everyone for coming along.

"We're all very excited to have this new facility at the Resort and with the opening special offer, we are sure the word will spread around town and to all visitors that this is the place to come".

DIY dengue weapon

In our daily scanning of all things internet, we've come across a simple, hand-made mosquito trap is a very inexpensive way to kill mosquitos and could help stave off the hand of dengue.

It's also chemical free, just a mix of water, brown sugar and yeast, and might be a useful weapon in your armoury to come through the dengue dilemma unscathed.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Cut a clean, two litre plastic bottle, such as a soft drink bottle, in half. You'll want to cut slightly below where the bottle begins to taper toward the top. Keep both parts but throw away the cap.
  2. Boil one cup of water.
  3. Remove the water from heat and stir in one cup of brown or white sugar. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  4. Add one cup of cold tap water and stir.
  5. Wait for the water temperature to drop to 32 degrees (about room temperature).
  6. Once the water reaches the appropriate temperature, add one teaspoon of dry active yeast and stir.
  7. Pour this mixture in the bottom portion of the bottle.
  8. Tape black plastic around the bottle. You can use two doggie bags, but part of a garbage bag or shopping bag works, too.
  9. Place the top portion of the bottle, cap end down, in the bottom portion of the bottle. If your liquid actually touches the bottle's lip, pour some of it out. There must be enough space for the insects to enter the bottle and become trapped.
  10. Use tape to seal the two portions of the bottle.
  11. Place your trap.

A check to better hearing

Hearing loss is a prevalent issue in the community and according to Australian Hearing’s Belinda Lesina, it affects one in six Australians and 60 per cent of people over 60.

Lesina, Manager at Australian Hearing Cairns and Atherton, says hearing loss generally occurs gradually and it’s often family or friends who notice it first.

“Many people say they can hear but they can’t understand. They may complain that everyone mumbles or have difficulty following conversations in noisy places,” Lesina said.

“Simple things, like turning up the TV or having trouble hearing the phone ring are often the early warning signs.

“If you’ve thought about your hearing but haven’t done anything, a 15 minute hearing check is all it takes to give you peace of mind. And if you are having hearing problems, there are many products and services available to help you.”

Australian Hearing is making it easy to do something about your hearing by offering free hearing checks for seniors. To book your appointment, call 131 797 or visit Australian Hearing Carins at 95 Sheridan Street, Cairns or Australian Hearing Atherton at Atherton Professional Centre, Suite 5/29 Louise Street, Atherton.

Australian Hearing also regularly visits Port Douglas, Mossman, Smithfield, Edmonton, Manunda, Innisfail, Tully and Cooktown.
