Two titles in three weeks…it’s the stuff champions sides are made of.  As was the case for the Port Douglas Mudcrabs blue side, as they backed up their one day Far North Cricket C-grade title two weeks ago with the two-day title at the weekend.

Fresh from defeating their Port Douglas counterparts, Muddies Green, two weeks ago in the one-dayers, a wash-out of the weekend’s two-day final at Port Douglas Sports Complex was not the way Muddies blue would have liked to defeat Mulgrave Punjab, according to captain Simon Cody.

While the Muddies went through the season undefeated and beat Muddies Green in the semi-final, they didn’t expect a wash-out of the entire two days to be the way they’d wrap up the title.

“It’s not the way we would have liked to have won it,” Cody said. “But the Blues are very happy we’ve collected both trophies for the club.”

Saturday’s play was called off at 11am and Sunday’s at 2pm due to an unplayable outfield, despite groundsman Troy Shepherd curating the pitch to a playable surface after two days’ solid rain.

Taking the title on a superior points tally, Cody said it was the way the boys gelled that was the secret behind their success.

“It’s a testament to the boys that we got up and won, as we’ve played a lot of the season with nine or 10 players after losing one to the UK early in the year,” he said.

“We were still hurting physically from the semi-final, but it was the way the boys came together and got along well all year that was the secret.”

“And it was great to see Vic Chandra come down to the ground in his lunch break to high-five all the players on Sunday, we missed him being able to play in the final, but he’s been a big part of the team this year.”

Cody said the majority of the side intended to return next season, and hoped the side could be bolstered by some Muddies green players to field a Cricket Far North B-grade team.
