Snakes hang on by skin of their fangs
The Taipans almost pulled off mission impossible this round with two road wins, but sadly it wasn’t to be.
They led with 30 seconds to go against league leaders NZ Breakers on Thursday night but were pipped at the post. Luckily the hoops Gods let them hang on against Adelaide two nights later.
Two wins might have had them in the top four but the milk is spilt and we can only focus on what’s real – yes we can still make it... JUST!
Only the top two, Perth and NZ, are locks for post season action and the other two spots will be determined over the last two rounds.
We have another tough double this round but should account for Adelaide again this Friday night which is on our real estate. We drop that one and we don’t deserve a finals berth.
We must follow up with the hardest trip in the caper on Sunday – Perth in Perth (against 12,000 screaming sand-gropers). We then finish the season at home against the Melbourne Tigers which is very winnable.
Will two wins get us home? It’ll all depend on other results but we have one thing in our favour – we are relatively healthy and playing the best we have all season right now.
Wollongong, Melbourne and Sydney are all walking very wounded at the moment and have all lost key players, but we on the other hand are gelling well and executing quite nicely.
Cairns are a bit like the LA Lakers this season where they haven’t had the best of years, but if they can sneak in they are the biggest chance to cause an upset.
I’m sure coach Fearney will be using the old adage ‘we can only worry about what we can control’ meaning take care of the wins and the rest will hopefully fall our way. but he’ll be no doubt be hoping those basketball Gods help eliminate some competition. I know I am!
Round 23
NZ vs Melb – Go Kiwis, by 8
Wollongong vs Sydney – Someone has to lose which rocks! Gong by 2
Cairns vs Adelaide – Cairns by 5 or Fearney will use expletives none of us have heard before!
T/ville vs Melbourne – TV can still also make it so this will be a beauty – the home side by 12.
Perth vs Cairns – mmmmmmmmm. Perth by 5 but I hope I’m wrong.
