Paws On The Run 2013

Local joggers are hitting the streets in record numbers, and there's a new event on the horizon for those in need of a short-term goal.

Port Douglas is becoming a runner's paradise with the success of the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival and Solar Eclipse Marathon, and on 20 April athletes can lace up their sneakers, and grab their pet for the 'Paws On The Run' fun run to raise money for local animal shelter, Paws and Claws.

"I love running, I think it's a really nice place to get out and go for a run," said event organiser, Liz Need. "The reason I chose the fun run was a combination of combining two things I really love - running and animals."

While the course is yet to be finalised, Liz said the Port Douglas event will offer two course lengths of two kilomoetres and seven kilometres with the latter expected to take in a stretch of Four Mile Beach, the Mirage Country Club, Port Douglas Marina, with the finish in Market Park.

The fun run is sure to attract good support with the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival Social Run Club members already looking forward to the challenge.

"We already have some great prizes on offer from the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas, Synergy Reef Sailing, Actin Fitness and a free entry into the Great Barrier Reef Marathon," Liz said.

Entry into the fun run will be $10 with the starting gun breaking the morning silence at 8am.

And for those who don't fancy the idea of working up a sweat, there'll be plenty of entertainment at the finish line with 'Bark In The Park'.

"There'll be stalls and family activities," Liz said. "People who don't want to part of the run can still come down and bring their animals and be part of a few different activities."

One of these activities includes 'So You Think You Can Bark', a unique song competition that's sure to attract attention.

All funds raised goes towards the building of Paws and Claws new animal care centre in Craiglie.
