Vikings pillage U14 points

The Under 14 Reef Raiders headed down to take on the Innisfail Vikings on Friday night at Mann Street in Cairns.

They started slowly out of the blocks with some silly errors and missed tackles which saw them behind 12-0 after 20 minutes.

But the next 10 was all the Raiders with some great picking and driving which was allowing the backline of Cannon, Grogan and Cotton to play some running rugby which soon saw Cannon turn the territory into points.

After the kick off the boys showed the Vikings how to put a team try on as the forwards controlled the ruck and the backline put some passes together to send Wayne Oui over out wide.

Just as the Raiders were on a high the Vikings brought them back down to earth by scoring a quick try themselves.

After the kickoff a penalty went to the Raiders, but with no time left on the clock a quick tap was taken and a chip kick over the top saw Grogan collect the ball and beat two covering defenders to score and take the lead by 19-17 at the half.

After the break during which the coach was full of praise for their comeback, the boys kicked it deep and looked to have pressed the Vikings but two missed tackles saw the Vikings on the attack again 40 metres out. With this they scored again to take the lead back.

Soon after they scored again and it was up to the Raiders to fight back, The Raiders did score again to Cannon and this was converted from the sideline to see them get just five points behind.

But to the Vikings credit they fought back well and put another try on. This was due to one of the Raiders getting sent from the field.

The final score saw the Vikings triumph 38-26.

The coach was happy with the first half but a few things that weren't executed well in the second half turned the game in the Vikings' favour.

The players that stood out were Doug Parkes and Fraser Cotton, but the Port Putt Putt Man of the Match was Quinlyn Cannon.

The next and final round game will be played at Port Douglas against Barron Trinity with kick off at 7:15pm.
