Nervous wait on NYE fireworks

The future of the much-loved New Year's Eve fireworks in Port Douglas is once again up in the air as Council deliberates on a funding application by the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber has requested $3000 for 2012's celebrations, a figure which Council has provided for the past three years.

The cost of the two fireworks displays, traditionally held at around 8.30am for those with young families and again at midnight, is $12,000 with the majority of the shortfall donated by local businesses.

"We're optimistic we'll get that but of course there are no guarantees," said Chamber committee member Ken Dobbs.

"Without that (funding) it's going to be very difficult. That's the seed funding, we'll still have another $9,000, but we've got the first $3,000."

The New Year's Eve fireworks in Port Douglas have become a highlight for partygoers, and Mr Dobbs said the town as a whole would suffer should funding efforts fizzle.

"From the Chamber point of view we believe the community has the expectation that we'll do something New Year's Eve. It's great for business, it's great for our businesses, and to have nothing in in town would be a real shame."
