Eclipse one to remember

Thousands of people flocked to beaches around the Douglas region to catch a glimpse of this morning's total solar eclipse.

The atmosphere at Port Douglas' Four Mile Beach was electric as the 6.38am time of totality crept closer.

The weather Gods kept people guessing throughout the eclipse's entirety with patchy cloud passing in front of the sun sporadically. And while all was clear on Four Mile Beach as the moon passed the half-way mark, only glimpses of totality could be seen as a larger cloud partly obscured the view.

But it didn't dampen the spirits of eclipse watches. Gasps of delight and despair could be heard as the countdown clock drew ever closer.

As darkness descended there was a sense of solidarity - a togetherness among the crowd that only an event this significant could foster.

Few were left disappointed on a beautifully tranquil morning in paradise.
