A Port Douglas black spot is back in the news, but it has nothing to do with the solar eclipse. The infamous intersection at the Captain Cook Highway and Port Douglas Road was the scene of two more incidents - on Monday and again yesterday.

Port Douglas Police said a 36 year-old Sunshine Coast man driving a Toyota Hilux turned into oncoming traffic on Monday afternoon at around 5pm, colliding with a Hyundai Getz driven by a Port Douglas man.

Both drivers received minor injuries and were treated at the Mossman Hospital before being released.

Emergency service crews were called out for the second time yesterday around midday when two more vehicles collided (pictured above).

Traffic was detoured through Port Gardens and onto Old Port Road as the scene was cleared.

In March this year, State Member for Cook David Kempton was quoted in The Newsport article '<link roundabout-shelter-back-on-agenda.7313.0.html external-link-new-window external link in new>Roundabout, shelter back on agenda' (Wednesday 21 March, 2012) saying the LNP would commit to a roundabout at the notorious intersection.

“With a state debt of $85 billion there are going to be limited funds available however to show the LNP commitment to Douglas we will construct a roundabout on the Cook Highway intersection, and provide a gateway to the towns of Port Douglas and Mossman.”

Port Douglas Police officer-in-charge Sergeant Damian Meadows urged drivers to be aware of the wet road conditions and take into account the increased level of traffic the region will experience over the eclipse period.
