Parkes shines for barnstorming Raiders
The Under 14 Reef Raiders headed down to Mann Street on Friday night to avenge the loss of last week. The opposition to feel the wrath of the Raiders would be the Highlanders.
From the kick off the Raiders were on their game and stole the ball scoring within two minutes through number 8 Aran Price.
From the Highlanders' kick off the Raiders worked the ball to halfway and put a backline movement together which saw Quinlyn Cannon run 45 meters to put the ball over the line.
From these two quick tries the Raiders put the foot down and put 36 unanswered points on with Daniel Walsh, Kienan Grogan and Cannon adding two more to his tally for the night.
He probably should have scored two or three more but he showed some real team spirit in passing the ball to players to score tries or just to get their hands on the ball.
The second half kicked off with the Highlanders showing their fighting spirit and getting over the line within five minutes. But these were the only points for the team that showed great rugby spirit with only 12 players.
The Raiders had their chances in the second half but couldn't get over the line until the last play of the game a line out was formed and Fraser Cotton took the ball and ran 35 metres before slipping the ball to Grogan to run untouched over the chalk. This try took his tally to two tries for the night.
Final score: Raiders 43 def. Highlanders 5
The players of the match were Ethan Ross and new player Doug Parkes, but the Port Putt Putt Player of the Day went to Daniel Walsh whose defence and charging runs earned him the accolade.
Next week the Raiders will try and continue on this good form.
