A number of jellyfish known as 'Blubbers' have been sighted in the water and washed ashore at Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas.

According to the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club, there has been an outbreak of the jellyfish species over the past couple of weeks, however, as the sting is not considered serious (it can cause a rash to those affected) Four Mile Beach remains open at this stage.

Instances of stings will be recorded and if they are deemed to be too frequent, lifesavers may make the decision to temporarily close the beach.

Some sightings of Blue Bottle jellyfish have also been recorded of late

Stinger nets will be deployed in the main swimming areas of Port Douglas and Cairns northern beaches on Monday 5 November.
