Time for a change

It's official - the majority of people want Queensland to adopt Daylight Savings. Well, that's what readers of The Newsport are saying anyway.

To save or not to save has been an ongoing debate in Queensland, with some believing the extra hour of daylight is unnecessary in the Sunshine State.

Other Australian States moved their clocks forward one hour on Sunday morning. So what are we missing out on?

As a tourist destination, our region in particular could benefit from an extra hour of daylight.

People would stay out longer, on our beaches, on our streets, and with any luck, in our shops and restaurants.

Like it or not Port Douglas has become a family holiday location. The annual family holiday could be enhanced with longer days meaning more opportunities to explore the region and for parents to interact with their children. That means more opportunities for our businesses.

There is also the argument that people, including locals, would prefer to get outdoors and be active in the evenings. The extra hour could help promote a healthier lifestyle.

Falling in line with most other States would end confusion over time differences and allow for easier communication in business and with family and friends interstate.

Queensland, and especially Far North Queensland, is known for its laid back (slow) nature. Let's not make it worse for ourselves by being behind the time.
