Douglas cricketers in top form

by Levi Trewick

Last week, a team of young Douglas cricketers played a three day carnival in Tolga as part of the trials for selecting a peninsula school boys team.

Eight teams of 12 years and under players from the region participated: Douglas, Tablelands, Tully, Mulgrave, Innisfail, Barron River, Cairns and Cairns Independent.

The carnival was a great success, with the worthy Innisfail team taking home the trophy at the end of the three days.

Douglas made their mark, winning two of their three all-day matches. The strength of our bowling was noticed by many of the other teams and coaches, and the Douglas coach, Doug Barnes, had many reasons to be proud of the boys.

The start of the day was looking disappointing due to rain but it soon cleared and captains Hugo Corrie and Levi Trewick lost the toss to Mulgrave.

Douglas was sent out to bat in steamy conditions with Levi and Nathan Deuble opening the batting. They looked confident until Nathan was unluckily bowled out on 12, sending Daniel Davidson to greet Levi at the crease.

These two boys put on a run partnership of 108, with Levi retiring on 55 off 57 balls and Daniel retiring on 53 off 51 balls. Ryan Doble was in magnificent form until a ripper steamed in and clean bowled him.

After that the run rate was ticking and it was high hopes for all the boys. Hugo Corrie and Michael Ives both put on a respectful 17 runs each to bring Douglas’ batting innings to a close on 5/248 after 40 overs.

Rex Hawkes opened the strong bowling attack, putting pressure on the Mulgrave batters, while at the other end Levi supported him taking 3 wickets in the 5 overs he bowled.

Cleaning up wickets was the order of the day as the following bowling stats reveal:

Sam Corrie 1/6 off 2 overs
Ryan 1/3 off 2
Nathan 2/9 off 3
Zac Osborne 2/6 off 2
Hugo 2/0 off 2
Levi 3/4 off 5.

This tidy bowling was well supported by our sensational wicket keeper, Michael Ives, and strong catching and fielding skills from all the team, but especially Reuben Allison and Callum Mather. Douglas cleaned up Mulgrave, bowling them all out 11/64 after only 24 overs.

The second day, the toss was lost to Innisfail and Douglas took to the field first, the opponents leaving a batting score just a little too hard for the boys to chase down. Considering it was such a strong team, Douglas was justifiably proud of only losing to them by 45 runs.

By the third day, the boys were tiring and sore, sporting a few war wounds, but summoned the courage to nail a victory over the Cairns team leaving Douglas at a respectable place on the table of teams.

Most of the boys then returned home for a well-deserved rest, leaving Rex Hawkes and Levi Trewick for a fourth day of play, as both these boys had been selected for the Possible and Probables match from which the selectors would name a Peninsula representative team.

Levi and Rex both played admirably amongst a bevy of exceptional young cricketers. The end of the day saw Levi being named as a shadow player for the Peninsula team, another honour for our Douglas Cricket Club.
