No extension for 3.nineteen
Cairns Regional Council has knocked back Port Douglas cafe 3.nineteen's request to hold off on the demolition of the building it currently leases on the waterfront.
Owners of 3.nineteen Mark and Hoaf Burnett argued that significant economic benefits were to be shared by the community should the planned December demolition be delayed until such time State and Federal government funding for the waterfront project be secured.
In a letter to Mayor Bob Manning, the Burnett's outlined their case and urged Cr Manning to reconsider.
In response, Acting Council CEO Peter Tabulo wrote to Mr Burnett saying there was no room for negotiation.
"With regard to the longer term future use of the area, Council has decided that demolition of all the buildings and the opening up of this area for the future parkland redevelopment is in the best interest of the broader community for such to be occurring now.
"The end result will enable Council to be ready to commence any future works as a priority without the constraints of having to deal with extinguishments of leases and the demolition works should the buildings and tenants be left within the proposed parkland areas."
The cafe will remain open until 18 November.
