The Ordinary Meeting of Council held in Mossman yesterday drew such interest many observers were forced to sit on the floor, with one particular agenda item attracting the most attention.

A full contingent of councillors attended the meeting as dozens of onlookers, including students from Mossman State High School, waited patiently as each item on the agenda was addressed.

Division 10 councillor Julia Leu remarked to her fellow councillors on the passion for local politics in the Douglas region, adding that an Ordinary Meeting of Council in Cairns was lucky to attract an audience of one or two.

Many in the public gallery were keen to hear Council's discussion on the 'Review to fees and charges at Council managed caravan parks and campgrounds,' a contentious issue that had raised the ire of Wonga Beach caravan park's permanent residents.

However, the discussion centred on the maximum stay period allowed in Council managed tourist parks, leaving many people's questions about the future of the fee structure unanswered.

At the meeting, Council declared a renewed focus on sourcing state and federal government funding for the Port Douglas Waterfront with Mayor Bob Manning describing the project as "critical" and a "top priority."

“Council has many priorities and this is right at the top,” Cr Manning said. “But, without the money, we’re going nowhere.

“So our priority is now to seek out funding opportunities through the State and Federal governments and we need to remain flexible to allow the best chance of success.”

As the first act of master plan implementation, buildings along the waterfront have recently been demolished and will be transformed into open public parkland during the next two months.
