Port Primary holds own Olympics

Future champions of Australia sport were celebrated on Wednesday at the Port Douglas Primary School as students, teachers and parents took part in the school's annual Sports Day.

Students of from all grades took to the oval in a variety of events worthy of an Olympic year including the 400m, 200m, 100m and 80m sprints, relays, long jump, high jump and shot put.

Mums and dads lined the side of the track cheering their children down to the finish line.

One parent described the 400m race more as a marathon than a sprint.

"At times in the 400m it appeared that the track had an uphill section as the kids' legs began to burn at the half way mark. To their credit though the little legs continued to pump to bring them home across the line."
