Junior AFL match reports

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for the Port Douglas Junior Crocs, but all players showed great character in their latest matches.

UNDER 8

With new footy jumpers the mighty Port Douglas Crocs Under 8s were jumping out of their skin on a fresh Sunday morning match against the North Cairns Tigers.

Led from the front by match day captain Taj ”Ling” Anderson, he kept his forwards busy with many raking left foot kicks deep into our forward line where Hugo ”Murphy” Ellison and Kalan ”McDermott” Poole ran wild and stretched the Tigers' defence.

Improved Daniel ”Lake” Harrington and Ethan ”Chicken Wing” Scott were creative in the middle and the solid rucking contests of Sam ”Cox” Wall and the rebounding efforts of Kai ”Hern” Durie and Colby ”Manson” Taylor kept the crowd well entertained.

The little pocket rocket Hayden ”Libba” Cresswell played well in all three zones throughout the match while when Angus ”Lewis” Van Rouylan, when not tripping over his shoe laces, was playing a ripper of a game dishing out many linking hand balls to his partners in crime Tam ”Smiles” Neguyen and Dalton ”Sexton” Wall.

Coach’s awards went to Taj, Tam and Angus. Special mention to all our Under 8s who assisted North Cairns with player numbers.

UNDER 10

Under 10s had a cold start at Trinity Beach last Sunday but soon warmed up as they scrambled for the ball against North Cairns.

Again, some of the Under 8s (Tam, Hugo, Kye and Angus) helped to make up the team.  Points were kicked by Anthony Long and Scott Cooper.

Some great marks and play came from all of the team including Jake Sherwell, Jamie Hudson, Slade Roberts, Dean Laurence, Jacob Rich, Harry Walker and Sam Corrie.

It was a tough game with Crocs making North Cairns work very hard to get possession.

This week’s medal went to Jamie Hudson and awards to Jake Sherwell, Sam Corrie and Slade Roberts.

UNDER 12

With two games to play in a day, the Under 12 Crocs knew that they had some serious work to do on Sunday in Cairns. Their first match against Cairns Centrals Red saw the Crocs take an early lead that they held on to for the remainder of the game.

Brayden Wall kicked a couple of early goals, stamping the Crocs' authority on the game early. He was well supported by Ryan, Rueben and Jack who all showed their desire to win the ball in contested situations. The Crocs ran out winners by five goals.

After a short break the boys fronted up for their second game of the day against Pyramid Power. In a fast paced first quarter the Crocs were simply out run as their quick opponents consistently beat them to the ball.

To the credit of all Crocs' players they stepped up to the challenge, proving that the Under 12 Crocs are a team of significant character.

In the second quarter the boys lifted their intensity and by the third quarter their on-field team talk saw them apply some serious pressure on the opposition.

Just minutes before the final siren, Brody Taylor put through a terrific goal that was enjoyed by the crowd of supporters on the sidelines. Despite this late goal, Pyramid Power proved too strong on day, running away with a solid victory.
