Locals win Champion of Champions

Mossman Golf Club hosted the Far North Queensland Champion of Champions event last Sunday. Mossman Golf Club members Peter Chrisfield won the Men's Championship and Gennai Goodwin won the Ladies Championship as well as Junior Champion.


Earlier in the week, Tuesday’s field of 36 players competed in a Stableford event which was won by Mal Phillips with 44 points.  Second place Des McPherson with 42 points on a count-back to Tony Monahan.

Nearest the pins were Ken Deuble on 6, John Carney on 8 and 13, Ian Steley on 10 and G. Muter on 17.

The winner of Wednesday’s nine hole event was Russell Watkins with 21 points on a count-back to R. Vanmardeveld, and third place John Deuble. Nearest the pin was Barry Rouse on 8.

Thursday’s Ladies event was won by Gayle Healey with 35 points, in second place was Ellen Clark with 31 points on a count-back to Jane Chidgey and Treveen Page. Nearest the pins were Helen Gabour on 6, 13 and 17, and Jane took out hole 8.

The new special Friday Frolic (9 holes golf, shared motorised buggy and 6 pack in ice to share for $30 per player) was enjoyed by plenty of social players.  For players with handicaps, the competition was won by Matt Gray with 21 points for nine holes.

Saturday’s L.J. Hooker Monthly Medal was won by Tony Monahan with a nett 67 and runner-up Peter Santarossa with a nett 70. Here are some more results from the day's play:

  • Gross winners: A Grade Art Howard 79, B Grade John Deuble 83, C Grade Norm Lockwood 92
  • Nett winners: A Grade John Norris 71, B Grade Mick Lancaster, C Grade Dave Addison 71.
  • Nearest the pins: Ian Steley on 6, Art on 8, Dave Nesbitt on 10, Dennis Blake on 13 and Steve Gray on 17.


The Ladies Combined Club Monthly Medal was won by Bette Wells with a nett 71 and runner-up Christie Bouwkamp with 76. Lyn Heimann won the putting competition, while nearest the pins were Jane Chidgey on 8 and Bette on 10.
