Dragons smash top team

The Verri Industries Douglas United Dragons have extended their unbeaten run to six matches with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Edge Hill on Saturday night.

It was a vintage performance from the Dragons who were quick out of the blocks on the night, were able to weather the storm when Edge Hill had their moments, and completed the victory with a late goal.

The Dragons were out of the gates early on, piling the pressure on the opposition and creating chances regularly. The Dragons were rewarded for their early dominance in the sixth minute when Ciaran
Lemon, celebrating his 30th birthday, scored from a deflected free kick to notch his tenth goal of the campaign.

Moments later Nick Houghton made it two nil with arguably the goal of the season. Picking the ball up in midfield he was allowed too much space to dribble into before lashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

To their credit Edge Hill responded and were able to mount a couple of spells of concerted pressure on the Douglas goal. Were it not for the outstanding performance of keeper Gary Fitzgerald, Edge
Hill may have found a way back into the match.

Fitzgerald underlined his claims to the player of the year award with a series of fine saves, one in particular leaving both sets of players in disbelief as to how a goal was not scored.

The score remained at two nil until half time and beyond with both teams probing without carving out too many clear-cut chances. Edge Hill were reduced to ten men when a moment of madness saw their striker take a swing at Dragons skipper Nick Tither. The referee saw the incident and rightly sent the player from the field.

The Dragons kept the foot on the throat after the sending off and wrapped up the three points in the 81st minute when Ian Marsh was on hand to head home after a great move. It was just reward for a
huge performance from the striker who again worked tirelessly all match and was rightly awarded the Paddy’s Bar Man of the Match.

Next up for the Dragons is a trip up to Borzi Park to take on Mareeba. With the teams around the Dragons on the table all playing each other in the coming weeks, a win will see the moving up into the playoff spots.
