Lazarus rises to the occasion

by Steve Cruickshank

Saturday saw a small contingent of shooters turn out for a 500 metre double shoot with very overcast conditions and gusty winds making it a difficult range.

First on the mound was Steve Lazarus from Cairns, shooting in the F Class standard comp (mechanically supported 308 calibre with telescopic sights).

Steve opened with a 4 and a 5 which he cut and then went on to squeeze off ten pretty good shots to shoot 56/1 out of a possible 60.

Rob Wearne was next down in the Full Bore comp (Manually supported 308 calibre with peep sights). Rob shot a 4 and a V bull for his sighters, he cut the 4 and then went on to shoot very well.

Unfortunately, a wind gust carried one shot off target and Rob dropped a few points giving him 45/2 out of a possible 50.

Neil Attwood was last to take aim at the target in the first ten shot round. Neil opened with a 4 and a 5, cut the 4, and then went on to shoot a string of 4s with one 3 to post a first round score of 40/0 out of 50.

Steve Lazarus was back on the mound for the second 500 metre shoot. Steve opened with a 5 and a 6, he cut the 5 and went on to shoot exceptionally well with a 4 sneaking in at the end to give him a score of 64/4 out of a possible 66.

Rob Wearne was back on the mound to try and better his first range score. Rob opened with a V Bull and a Bulls Eye and went on to post a very credible score of 53/2 out of 55 in the second 11 shot match.

Neil Attwood was back for his chance to better his first score and opened with a 4 and a 5. He cut the 4 and went on to shoot some better shots with a few 4s, a few Bulls eyes a few V Bulls to post a final score of 48/2 out of a possible 55.

The final tally from both ranges was Steve Lazarus with 120/5 out of a possible 126 in the F Class Standard competition. Rob Wearne came in first in the Full Bore competition with 98/4 out of a possible 105 followed by Neil Attwood with 88/2.

A good afternoon was had by all. The club would like to thank the markers and the scorers and also invite anyone interested in target shooting to come along at 1pm every Saturday afternoon at the club situated half way between Port Douglas and Mossman on the Cook Highway.
