Dragons 3rd Div smash Southside

Friday night saw a game between Douglas United and Southside in the FNQ Football third division at Cassowary Park. Douglas would chalk up another win by out-playing and out-scoring Southside heavily.

The game started well for Douglas with Danny Ferrero looking very promising down the right hand side. Playing in a wing back position Danny was showing how keen he was to cover as much ground as possible with strong runs all game.

It did not take long for Douglas to get their first goal when Joe Fox hit a half volley from around 20 yards to find the far corner of the keeper's net. Joe, getting a rare start up front for the Dragons, showed he has more than enough quality to play numerous positions.

Goal number two came soon after when Danny Houghton managed to send the ball over the keeper from around the same distance as Joe Fox. The goal went nicely with a good solid performance from Danny on the night.

Just after Danny Houghton had made it 2-0 Douglas they almost got to witness a bit of magic courtesy of Ross Hardie. Ross attempted a bicycle kick to put the Dragons 3-0 up only to see the keeper pull off a good save to keep the score at 2-0. Judging by the smile on his face Ross was obviously pleased with this effort.

Goal number three did come soon after that when Ash Woods slotted one home nicely with the side of his foot from the edge of the area finding the bottom corner.

Then Southisde showed the Dragons they had not come here to just roll over and get beaten by a huge margin. They delivered a good ball in to the box and after a bit of a scramble they had managed to poke the ball into an open net to take the game to 3-1.

Just before the half Douglas saw a moment best forgotten when a Southside player decided to physically assault Douglas player Matty Wray which would lead to the Southside player being sent off, meaning Southside would have to play the second half with only ten men.

After the restart the tempo of the game had dropped significantly as Douglas looked to retain possession and Southside worked hard for the cause. After around 50 minutes Neil Burcombe went clean through, rounded the keeper but unfortunately his shot rolled wide of the gaping net.

With around twenty minutes left it was another Douglas player who went close when Joe Fox hit the post. Minutes later though Adam Wright finished nicely to take it to 4-1 Dragons.

Soon after Adam was through again and grabbed his second in a matter of minutes to make it 5-1 Douglas.

With the game coming towards the 90 minute mark Douglas had one goal left in them when Nick Despres added another high quality finish taking the game to the final score of 6-1.

The 'Paddy's Irish Bar' Man of the match award would go to Ross Hardie who played a solid game on the night and retained the ball very well for the Dragons.

Next up for Douglas is a trip to Dimbulah this Friday in what promises to be a very entertaining game.
