Resorts recognised for effort

Accommodation providers in Port Douglas are being recognised for their efforts by TripAdvisor, receiving certificates of excellence after receiving rave review from their customers.

Macrossan House managers Trevor and Pip Hurst were thrilled to receive a 4 1/2 star rating.

"Our apartments are extremely clean, that's a real big thing, one of the biggest things people mention on TripAdvisor, and the service. That's what it comes down to," Mr Hurst said.

He said that while there are examples of businesses around town offering high levels of service, there is still much work to be done to bring it up to visitors' expectations.

"We get regular comments about the poor service in town, that's restaurants and retail, especially at this time of year.

"The reason for that is the big influx of itinerant workers that are getting work here because it's busy and they don't know what they're doing, I think.

"You'll find towards the end of the season you get less and less complaints because they're up to speed. But that's just life in a tourist town," Mr Hurst said.

He back calls for the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce to provide a training program for people new to town seeking work in a service industry.

"I totally agree with that. That's a really good idea. Customer focus is a huge thing, it's just service, it's not hard."

Boutique resort Coral Sea Villas also earned a 4 1/2 star rating from TripAdvisor.
