Gorge Centre opens to public

The new Mossman Gorge Centre opened with a 'soft' launch yesterday ahead of it's official opening in the coming weeks, and it immediately struck a chord with visitors with car spaces filling quickly and cafe and gallery proving popular.

General Manager Greg Erwin told The Newsport the centre had already "exceeded expectations" after the first few hours of trade.

"Everyone we've spoken to, their comments have been really warm and really heartening and they're wishing us the best."

He praised the efforts and enthusiasm of Centre staff, 90 per cent of whom are indigenous, in their ability to hit the ground running and create a positive atmosphere from day one.

"The staff have been outstanding, it has been a highlight of the whole project. To have created 60 indigenous jobs is something we're incredibly proud of.

"We're proud of every single one of them. They've worked really hard on developing their skills and getting themselves ready for today."

Mr Erwin highlighted the fact that locals with relevant identification can access the shuttle service to the Gorge for free.

"It is the oldest rainforest in the world and it is the oldest, most ancient living culture in the world. It's amazing," he said.
