Vale Ian 'Chisel' McCormack

Ian McCormack, better known to his legion of mates as 'Chisel' passed away on Saturday aged 63. He leaves behind wife Judy and sons Mark, Chris and Daniel.

Close friend Hugh Collins reflected on Chisel's life and said it was impossible not to like him.

"What can I say? He was a man for all seasons. Everyone who came into contact with him just loved him. He was generous and really outgoing, really extroverted.

Hugh said Chisel was always the life of the party which was often evident with in his choice of fashion.

"He loved wearing outrageous clothes. He was a real character.

"He was fanatical about Manly, he loved his fishing, loved his golf, and loved a punt."

Dave Evans recalled one story which perfectly illustrated his outgoing personality and passion for rugby league.

"He used to hang it on the AFL really badly. He used to say the players were fairies and that the goal umpires were like psychiatrists in their long white jackets.

"Andy (friend and Port Douglas Crocs president Andy Smith) put a challenge to him and said why don't you come out and give us a hand instead of mouthing off all the time.

"Chisel said I'll come down and goal umpire, it won't be hard. He turns up and goal umpired the whole game in a tutu.

"He was larger than life. He put himself out there to be ridiculed for the enjoyment of others."

John and Melanie Goodman sent it their memories of the man heavily involved in local surf life saving.

"Chisel was involved as a foundation member of the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club between 1983 and 84 as Vice President.

"Chisel was on the committee with various positions over the years, eventually succeeding Bruce Clarke as President from 1990 to 1993.

"Along with a few others, Chisel's enthusiasm and drive ensured the continuation of the club at a time when membership was especially low.

"As President, Chisel was responsible for organising M&R builders to build the toilets and showers, an extension to the existing gear shed and new fuel shed.

"He was an incredible fundraiser and local character whose legacy is permanently etched in the history of the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club.

"The Club thoughts go out to Chisel's beautiful wife Judy and children Mark, Chris and Daniel."

A service and wake will be held at the Mossman Golf Club at 3pm this Thursday. Buses leave the Barrier Reef Tavern at 2pm and return at 6pm.
