Two young international backpackers have experienced both sides of humanity after visiting Port Douglas last week.

The women in their mid-20's, Leila from Italy and Tess from Germany, were swimming at Four Mile Beach at around 8am last Wednesday after stashing their backpacks in the bushes.

After enjoying the pristine surrounds, they returned to find their bags containing their passports, credit cards, cash, phones, cameras, and clothes, stolen.

Left only in the bikinis they were wearing, they went to the police who took the pair to Dougies Backpackers where they received three night's free accommodation, clothing, and meals.

Due to start work at a road house in Cloncurry but without the money for bus fares, The Newsport's Des Rolfe delivered Leila and Tess safely to Cairns and gave them money for a meal, while their new employer had paid for their bus tickets from Cairns to Cloncurry.

They are arranging for new identification documents through their respective consulates.

While there is a minority of people who have nothing but their own interests at heart, there are plenty more who are willing to extend a helping hand to people down on their luck.
