A relaxed sounding Val Schier is contemplating a life outside of local politics after suffering a decisive loss at the recent local government elections.

Speaking with The Newsport yesterday, Ms Schier said she was just one of a large number of Mayors who suffered from electorates eager for a new direction.

"The majority of incumbent Mayor's across the state were swept aside and there was a real mood for change," she said.

"People believe that someone else can solve the issues of the economic downturn in tourism and retail so I wish my successors well."

She said that she was not sure what the future held for the region's art and culture industry after meeting strong opposition to the $150 million Cairns Entertainment Precinct.

"I had one real regret, and that's the loss of the Cairns Entertainment Precinct because that was going to be a critical public sector investment to stimulate the economy. It's quite shocking really.

Like the residents who voted her out of office, Ms Schier is also looking forward to a change and is about to embark on a new chapter of her life outside of politics.

"I had no intention of staying in politics beyond one more term so that's the end of me in politics.

"I am (relaxed) I can tell you. In some ways it's a relief because it's not going to be easy the four years ahead.

"There are some people in the community who want to blame so it's hard for anyone in politics. But I've worked incredibly hard and I'm very proud of my achievements."

She said that having been involved in public service throughout her career, she is keen to continue in a role which serves the community after a break which will take her to Laos and Myanmar.

"I have to go off and see if I can get a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi who's one of my heroes, one of the people I admire the most," she said.
