Junior Sharks' match reports

Peninsula School Boys

The Douglas region's Under 12 Peninsula team travelled to Innisfail on Thursday to compete in the Peninsula School Sport Under 12 Rugby League Championships.

The boys played a number of games of football throughout the day against teams from throughout the far north region.  The game results were as follows:

Mossman 34 defeated Evelyn 0
Cairns 26 defeated Mossman 0
Innisfail 28 defeated Mossman 0
Mossman 44 defeated Tablelands 4

Team Coach Earl Osborne was impressed with the boys’ performance on the day saying that the boys played outstanding football and represented their respective schools and the Mossman region with pride.

13 teams from across the region and over 230 boys competed in front of selectors who short-listed down to 34 players who were called back to train on side on Friday.

Xavian Pitt, Callum Mather and Zachary Osborne were short listed and returned to Cairns to train with the selectors and players from the Northern Pride on Friday.

The selectors then named a 17 man squad and Wonga Beach State School Student and Mossman Sharks player Callum Mather was successful and will now head to Ipswich in June to represent the Far Northern Region in the Queensland trials.

UNDER 7s

Saturday saw the kids travel to Vico Oval at Kanimibla the home of the Northern Pride and Kangaroos where the Under 7s played some great football.

In their first game, the Kangaroos had the little Sharkies were on the back foot with the opposition team running in five tries to Mossman’s one. Wyatt Lourigan was the sole try scorer in this game.

In the second game against Brothers, Mossman came out firing to score six tries to their oppositions one by the end of the game.  Try scorers for this game were Wyatt Lourigan (3), Jack Hatfield (2) and David Neller.  O

On the day, some little tackling machines to mention were Wyatt Lourigan, David Neller and Matthias Jackonia.

Man of the match for the first game against Kangaroos goes to Wyatt Lourigan for his score of points and great defence.  The second game man of the match went to Blaze Wilson for good tackling and fantastic offloads that helped his team to cross the line on a few occasions.

Congratulations on your awards boys! Well done also to the rest of the team for your effort on the day.

UNDER 8s

The Under 8s Sharks had a great start to the season with a 20-4 win against Kangaroos.  A huge improvement in their defence saw the Sharks keep the ball in their half and resulted in tries for Ryan Hawking, Jayden, Tyson Osborne, Brodie Francis and Kaelen Marr.

Newcomer Jamie Borzi showed great attacking skills and Malachi Jackonia was unstoppable with his tackling.  In the second game against Brothers, fatigue and heat slowed the boys down a little and resulted in a 20-4 loss.  Malachi earned the Man of the Match and Coaches Award went to Tyson for a huge improvement.

UNDER 9s

The Mighty Mossman Under 9 team had a brilliant win in the first Game against Kangaroos.  All kids played well and are now starting to show signs of training hard on Thursday’s.

Braxton was a standout with great runs and attacks.  Acasia Bowen directed the team around the park in the hooker position with ease.  Mossman ended up winning 4 tries to nil.

The second game was much harder as we took on a fresh opponent in Brothers.  I think even in this early part of season this will be the team to beat.

Mossman players never gave up with Man of the Match, Lewis Duncan putting in some great ankle tackles bringing down some really big opponents and having some barging runs.

Mossman went down 4 tries to one but never gave up.

UNDER 12s

The Under 12 boys showed gutsy form on Saturday when they took down the Babinda Cowboys in a 44-0 win.

Backing up from a huge week of football with the Under 12 trials on Thursday, the Sharks showed outstanding form with off loads, breaks and length of the field tries.

Great team plays saw tries for Xavian Pitt, Phoenix Solomon, Tom Walker, Austin Tayley, Wade Duncan, Trazane Cobb-Fischer and Zachary Osborne (2) with successful conversions from Tom, Austin, Wade, Trazane and Zachary (2).

Tom's attacking earned him the Coaches Award and Zachary's commitment and game play resulted in him being awarded the Man of the Match.

UNDER 15s

The Under 15 Sharks kicked off their season on Friday night against arch rivals Ivanhoes at Redlynch.

In beautiful conditions for playing footy, the boys put in a much improved effort than the previous clash and started the game perfectly by working to their game plan and putting plenty of pressure on the Hoes attack.

Aiden Chesterfield made a welcome return to the team making damaging runs and good hard tackles and front row partner Jaggar Ablett played his usual no nonsense game involving himself heavily all night.

Ivanhoe’s went into halftime ahead on the score board after finding a couple of gaps out wide and taking advantage of some sleepy defenders.

With the score 12-6 the Sharks were certainly in with a shot at winning their first game of the year and went into the second half with a positive attitude.

However the Ivanhoes’ game plan became very evident after the break and attacked the flanks of Sharks' defence putting their big men out wide making plenty of ground and putting themselves into good field position.

Jake Todd had a fantastic game shutting down the Ivanhoes’ attack helping out his wingers who had a tough job. Tom Henley and Taheega Savage put in great efforts with their time on the field while Lachie Cowe and Wynn Adams also deserve a big pat on the back for trying their best in a tough game.

These boys are gradually building in confidence each week and are to be commended for their commitment and attitude.

The final score was 28-14 after Hoes crossed three times in the second half and the Sharks should be proud of their effort.

Bryce Caltabiano played well at hooker and man of the match went to Jake Todd for his effort on the night. With another good week at training the boys shouldn’t be to far off a win.

Under 11’s had a bye this weekend.
