Two new dance shows in Cairns

Wednesday 14 March 2012

Two new theatrical dance productions are coming to the Centre of Contemporary Arts in Cairns at the end of this month.

The first is entitled 'MASS'. It is described as an enthralling new dance theatre experience and has been created by internationally renowned Dancenorth Artistic Director Raewyn Hill.

Dancenorth keeps its focus firmly on creating dance theatre that is profound, confronting and highly physical. Its themes are taken from social issues.

In MASS, the concept of intimate communities assembling out of people sharing a deep meaningful experience is transported into the performance space.

MASS looks at situations where community manifests and dissipates, where the peculiar behaviour of people in close relationships creates further bonding and how people come to rely on each other, creating spontaneous connection that may not otherwise have existed.

MASS is an international collaboration that includes a new score by acclaimed Spanish composer Micka Luna with vocals by UK’s Jocelyn West (of David Lynch fame) and digital imagery from Mariona Ornedes (2011 winner of the Spanish National Award for Culture).

MASS is a brilliant new performance experience that reinvigorates the creation of dance theatre in Australia.

The second production is entitled ‘Don’t for Dancers’. This is a new dance work devised by award winning artists Nerida Matthaei and Nicole Canham.

When conformity is essential, the unexpected consequences of stepping outside the boundaries reveal themselves in ‘Don’t for Dancers’.

A wallflower, the belle of the ball, an overbearing chaperone and the male object of everyone’s desire meet in an imaginary dance hall where the cut of your dress and the way that you move can spell social success or suicide.

Matthaei and Canham with Leah Shelton and Alex Bryce investigate the dos and don’ts of social dancing from the 1925 book, ‘Don’ts for Dancers’ written by Karsinova.
