Trash TV

While many would agree there is a lot of rubbish on TV, with most analogue TV services in the region to be switched off by December 6, we're reminded that TVs are not trash.

Council are working with the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme to provide a free television drop-off service to dispose of unwanted analogue TVs.

Council’s Water and Waste General Manager Bruce Gardiner said details would be provided as to the timing of the collections, but residents are asked to hold on to their old sets in the meantime.

“What we don’t want is TV sets being placed in household wheelie bins or skip bins,” Mr Gardiner said.

“We want to avoid having these items go to landfill or being dumped illegally and a free drop-off and recycling service will make disposal easy and environmentally-friendly.

At this stage Council can’t say when the national recycling scheme will reach our region.

For those of you who have upgraded to a brand-spanking-new digital telly, don't forget that your old analogue set could go to someone less fortunate as a set top box is all that is needed to bring it up to scratch.

Check with your preferred charity as to whether they are happy to accept your old TV.

Mossman’s television transmission tower was successfully switched over to the digital service on Wednesday.
