Christmas help for those doing it tough
Queenslanders doing it tough in the lead up to Christmas may be eligible for $1.67 million in Queensland Government funding.
Community Services Minister Karen Struthers said 88 organisations throughout the state will share in the one-off funding to help those in immediate financial crisis.
"Christmas can be a particularly difficult time for families doing it tough," Ms Struthers said. "We know every little bit helps and this funding will be used across 138 locations in the state."
Ms Struthers said charities such as the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul will receive the funding.
"These charities will use the money for food parcels, food vouchers, cash and for paying essential household bills," she said.
"They can also provide referrals to community services for longer term support to people who may need it."
Ms Struthers said the 2011-12 State Budget provided extra support for vulnerable Queenslanders, including $14.7 million to help ease the cost of water, electricity and council rates for eligible households.
