More than a game for Soccer Mums

The annual Soccer Mums And Friends (SMAF) lunch is on again with around 50 ladies expected to indulge in an afternoon of entertainment Sea Bean Restaurant next week.

The event is in its third year and was established as a way for busy Soccer Mums (and friends) associated with the Douglas United Football Club to catch up for some fun.

"It's a way to get to know each other better rather than a rushed hello at footy training," said Club Treasurer, Jenny Elphinstone.

"It's an event where stay at home mums or girlfriends, and working mums or girlfriends can get out and catch up with each other. It also attracts Mums whose children have left the club so they can catch up with friends," she said.

For $25, those in attendance will enjoy a sit down lunch, a glass of bubbly, and some great company.

"We often find it difficult to get out at night together as someone has to still sort out the family meal, babysit etcetera, so lunch was an easier option.

"Most kids are at school and we finish in time to collect the kids. Mums with toddlers find it great as there are enough experienced hands available to help with the little people. It's a great way for these Mums to relax," Jenny said.

The importance of sport in the community is not lost on these dedicated parents who support their children and encourage participation, not just in soccer, but a wide variety of junior sport in the area.

"It gets kids active, (and) healthy, and in team sports you learn to communicate with each other. In the Douglas area we have great weather and are able to get out enjoy life and play sport.

"Sport can build new friendships and bonds between different groups of people. The kids find it great on interschool sports days that they know kids form other schools.

"Parents are the backbone of local clubs and put in many volunteer hours on top of work and normal family commitments," Jenny said.

"SMAF tries to fit into the entertainment and club atmosphere entities, making the (Douglas United Football) club a bit more than just a place for people to play the sport."

Mums and girlfriends from all sporting codes are welcome to attend the SMAF lunch, as according to Jenny "They do not seem to get out enough either!"

The SMAF lunch is to be held on Thursday 1 December, so for more information or to book call Yvonne Carr on 0458 993 492.
