ATEC hits town

Key tourism industry people from around Australia are meeting with local tourism operators at this week’s “Inbound Up North” conference in Cairns and Port Douglas.

The annual event is organised by the North Queensland branch of the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC), the peak body representing the tourism export industry.

Over 100 people participated in this year’s workshops at the Rydges Tradewinds on the Cairns Esplanade yesterday, which was followed by an evening function at The Wildlife Habitat.

Today, participants will experience tourist activities around the region, followed by a farewell dinner at the Sheraton Mirage.

CaPTA Sales Manager and NQ ATEC Committee Member Ben Woodward said the theme of this year’s event is “Icons of The Tropical North”.

“This year’s theme has been chosen to reinforce our region’s status as the premier gateway to the Great Barrier Reef,” he said.

“A key part of delivering this message is to incorporate the other aspects that make our destination stand out from others – the many additional experiences that complement the reef such as the World Heritage rainforest, native wildlife, indigenous culture, stunning beaches, and the accessible outback, and how these translate across all markets, from adventure to barefoot luxury.

“In light of the difficult year for inbound tourism not just in our region but across the country, this event is also the perfect opportunity to send a clear message to our industry colleagues that we’re still here and standing strong, and as ready for their business as we have ever been,” he said.
