A sea of red flowed down Port Douglas Road yesterday as hundreds of people participated in the Great Strides Walkathon against Cystic Fibrosis (CF).

The walk coincided with the entry into town of the 10th annual Great Escape Car Rally. Forty-eight colourful and eccentric cars carrying around 180 colourful and eccentric people had horns and sirens blaring as they passed the walkers, with scores of their family and friends joining them at the end of their journey in Port Douglas.

Walkers and our car rally guests united in Rex Smeal Park to celebrate their respective achievements.

Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects a number of organs in the body, especially the lungs and pancreas, by clogging them with thick, sticky mucus and is the most common life threatening, recessive genetic condition affecting Australian children.

At present there is no cure for CF, but the faulty gene has been identified and doctors and scientists are working to find ways of repairing or replacing it.

Events such as the Great Strides Walkathon and the Great Escape Car Rally raise much needed funds in the battle against the disease.
