Port Douglas Police have commended the efforts of two locals who made a citizens arrest on Saturday night in Macrossan Street, leading to two drunken visitors being arrested and charged with damaging property.

It is alleged the 22-year-old Irish man and the 26-year-old Cairns woman were held by two Port Douglas locals until police arrived, after allegedly smashing a sign at a main street business at approximately 11.30pm.

The two visitors were issued with tickets for being a public nuisance and police say further charges may follow to recover the cost of the damage to the signs.

Police are appealing for information regarding the alleged theft of a Holden utility on Mudlo Street, Port Douglas, sometime between 1am and 9.30am Sunday morning.

Port Douglas Police say an alleged offender entered the utility, which had keys in the ignition, and drove it 30 metres down Mudlo Street before crashing the vehicle into a tree.

The utility’s CD player, reported to be worth $350, was also listed as stolen. It is not yet known the financial extent of damages to the body the utility.

Police are also appealing for information into damage sustained on a red Toyota Yaris on Coral Drive, Port Douglas, at the weekend.

A large dent on the hatchback’s right front panel was reported to have occurred sometime between noon Saturday and noon Sunday.

A 23-year-old Mossman man will face Mossman Courthouse on October 5 after allegedly causing a public nuisance at Macrossan Street establishments last Friday night.

Police say the man was allegedly entering licensed premises and was attempting to take food from diners’ plates before being arrested.

Two drink drivers will also face Mossman Court on October 5 after being intercepted by Port Douglas Police in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A 28-year-old Lake Eacham woman was intercepted in Nautilus Street at around 1.30am and returned a reading of 0.10, while a 21-year-old Port Douglas man was apprehended during mobile patrols at around 3.30am and returned a reading of 0.106.
