Last Wednesday night the Cairns City Lions Under 18s, comprising of eight Port Douglas Crocs players, won the grand final beating North Cairns 17.11.113 to 11.7.73 in one of the most intense games ever seen.

Backmen, Lewis Butterss and Zak O’Gorman, were too strong for their opposition and kept North’s usually dynamic goal-scoring machine, Daniel Mooka, to few possessions and only a couple of goals.

Onballers, Jackson Brown and Michael Doust, were sensational clearing the ball from the centre and giving their goal kickers many easy opportunities.

Ruckman, Karl Zammataro, dominated his opposite number winning almost every tap-out from the centre and around the ground, while Tommy Long was strong all over the ground as was Michael Pidgeon.

Kerrod Andrews was unlucky to not get the best on ground honour as he was in everything from one end of the field to the other. Every time the ball went to ground he was there to pick it up and sprint away from his opposition.

The Lions got to the front in the first quarter and never lost the lead even though North Cairns did not give up and kept coming at them all night.

Dubbed by some senior players as the fastest game they had ever seen, one comment made was that "had some of us older players been out there we would not have got a touch."
