Fire restrictions from this Sunday

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) has declared a Fire Danger Period resulting in new rules on the lighting of fires from this Sunday.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said except for a fire for cooking or warmth, Queenslanders would not be allowed to light a fire regardless of size without a permit until midnight on Sunday, January 1, 2012.

"This is the second time in two years QFRS has implemented a Fire Danger Period during bushfire season as a step towards preventing a fire from escaping and potentially putting lives and property at risk," Mr Roberts said.

"Obtaining a permit to burn from your local fire warden is a simple process and ensures appropriate safeguards are in place to prevent escapes."

Mr Roberts said there were some types of fires which could be lit without a permit during a declared fire danger period, unless they are prohibited by local council or law.

"It is permitted to light a fire for cooking or warmth without a permit, providing it is lit within a prepared fireplace, for example an area cleared of flammable material," he said.

QFRS Commissioner Lee Johnson said regardless of the type of fireplace it was the responsibility of the person lighting the fire to ensure all precautions were taken.

"People should not only clear the area, but ensure they use as little fuel or fire as possible when lighting the fire and ensure it does not occupy an area greater than one square metre," Mr Johnson said.

"By all means we want people to enjoy their time outdoors, but remember for their safety and the safety of the community, it is vital a campfire is attended to at all times and is built in a way which it will be contained."

To make it easier for property owners who regularly require permits Local Fire Wardens have been given the flexibility to issue seasonal fire permits based upon local conditions.

Queenslanders are reminded this is not a "Fire Ban" and QFRS will continue to review the implementation of the Fire Danger Period as the season progresses.
