64km run lives up to its name
Have you ever thought the drive from Cairns to Port Douglas was a pain? Then spare a thought for the athletes who took part in the Cairns Roadrunners' 'It's Extreme' 64km ultra marathon between Kuranda and Port on Sunday.
The gruelling run, which took competitors along Black Mountain Road, down the famous Bump Track, and along Four Mile Beach, was the pinnacle event on a day which saw dozens of runners also attempt 21km, 16km, and 5km distances.
Ben Carter crossed the line first in the heat of the day with a time of 5hrs:45min:14sec while Glen Robinson came in just two minutes later in second and Brad Bartsch secured third in a time of 6:11:10.
Julie Sager was the first female across the line in a time of 6:41:58.
Runners in all events were greeted at the finish line by a vocal and supportive crowd which included volunteers from the newly formed Port Douglas Running Club.
Place getters in other events included:
Twin Bridges Half Marathon
1st - Philip Matthews 2:37:42
2nd - Daniel Wise 2:37:48
3rd - Tracey Mc Donald 2:43:29
16km Bump to Beach
1st - Paul Ryan 1:20:11
2nd - Lucy Forbes 1:25:18
3rd - Stewart Green 1:26:22
Many competitors will now turn their attention to the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival in November, in which runners will test themselves in a 74km ultra marathon, the Steve Moneghetti Invitational Half Marathon, a 10km fun run, and 5km charity event.
