Sports for Schools back for 2011
The second year of the 'Sport for Schools' program, an initiative of Coles Supermarkets, has been launched after $7 million worth of sports equipment was given away to 7500 schools in 2010.
And Jason Smith, store manager of Coles Port Douglas, is keen to to see local schools get a piece of the action.
"It's back bigger and better than ever and we want to get every school o\in the Port Douglas and Daintree region on board and get sport equipment for their school.
“We understand the financial and time pressure felt by parents and teachers to make sport in our community possible.
"The amount of sports equipment redeemed last year proves that when Port Douglas works together, we can make a real difference to our local schools and get kids active.”
Australian Olympic 400m gold medalist, Cathy Freeman, is the program's national ambassador.
“The school environment is where our children learn healthy habits. But this can be difficult without the proper gear," she said.
There are over 100 different items of sporting equipment up for grabs - here are just a few:
- Eight two-hour coaching sessions
- Footballs
- Netballs
- Softball gloves
- Sports first aid kits
- Relay baton sets
- High jump stands
- International starting blocks
- Cricket bats
- Orienteering kits
- Beginner juggling kits
- Pop-up goal
