New talent has local influence

Up and coming artist Jade Angela will be coming to Port Douglas to perform at the Iron Bar next month as part of a tour of Far North Queensland thanks to her booking agent and former Port Douglas local, Paul Milnes.

Milnes now resides in Melbourne after spending 15 years living in Port Douglas, but has big plans to reinvigorate his old stomping ground's music scene.

"I thought the music scene was really good when I first got up there (in 1989), then I saw it detereorate, hence why I'm trying to get acts coming up."

Milnes began his career as a booking agent working for well loved local establishments, and through his many years at Port FM.

"I was involved in working at the Court House and Henry's Bar getting involved with bands coming in and I just started booking bands.

"I moved to Melbourne to pursue my career with local bands. I was on Port Douglas Radio for five or six years so I made heaps of music contacts."

Jade Angela represents Milnes' first foray back into Port Douglas' live music market for some time, and he says she is working hard to establish her career in a highly competitive market.

"Jade is more like a night club performer. She does 20 minute 'power sets' and normally she has dancers but she'll be doing it (this tour) solo.

"She's releasing an EP (to be released late 2011), single and video and is trying to become more commercial. She's constantly in the recording studio.

"You've just got to have something unique and stand out. She's pretty powerful, and a good looking sort at just 4'10". (But) it's all about songwriting and performance, you've gotta have that catchy song."

Jade, who is also an actor and model, says she's looking forward to her first trip to Port Douglas.

"I've always wanted to go there so I'm excited. From what I've researched and what I've heard from friends, it's a beautiful place.

"I expect to have a relaxing time enjoying the tropical surroundings and nice weather. It's freezing here in Melbourne at the moment.

"I'm staying two nights in Port Douglas and performing at Iron Bar both nights, then I'm off to Cairns to perform at Gilligan's Resort for two nights."

And it looks like we can expect more live music acts journeying north thanks to Milne's 'Lizardskin Productions' with acoustic pop band 'Sarah and the King Bees' also coming to Port in early August.

Jade will be performing at the Iron Bar on 3 and 4 August, and at Gilligan's in Cairns on 5 and 6 August. You can check out her website at jadeangela@jadeangela.com.
