The sports wrap with Nicky G

by Nick Gibson

I wouldn’t call myself a huge tennis fan but I certainly get excited when the Australian Open and Wimbledon arrive on our sporting calendar.

As I'm still somewhat of a night owl I will look forward to watching the first televised games of Wimbledon with ‘Raffa’ in the men's draw and Aussie favourite Dokic in the women's.

I guess the most intriguing part of the men’s draw is will it be a Raffa vs Federer showdown as usual (both own 16 of the last 19 slams) or will Djokovic or ‘Brit’ Murray knock one or both of these guys out?

It would be great to see Murray break a 75 year British hoodoo and win this tournament but that’s got about as much chance of happening as there not being a rain delay for the next two weeks in London – or of Richmond winning the flag!

The women’s will be interesting as always even though I have no idea who’s playing, but for some reason it’s very easy viewing on the eye...This time next week we’ll know who’s hot and who’s not, and I’m tipping Federer to catch Sampras with Wimbledon No.7 (probably his last).

Did you know – In 1992, now Aussie Boomers basketball coach Brett Brown imported a slick American swingman import to the Bulleen Boomers named Dredrick Irving.

Dredrick played two years in Australia and failed to secure a spot in our national league but he and his wife had a child whilst here by the name of Kyrie.
This boy is now 19 years old and the hottest property in the basketball world right now. He is all but assured of going No.1 in the draft (Cleveland Cavaliers) and if my intel on this guy is correct, he will have an amazing career as a pro baller similar to Jason Kidd or Dwayne Wade.

Here’s the best part – he’s still an Aussie, and coach Brown is pulling strings to have him play at the next Olympics! So all you hoop junkies out there picture our possible starting five in London next year; Kyrie Irving, Patty Mills, David Anderson, Nathan Jawaii and Andrew Bogut! Not too shabby....

This week's winners

NSW Blues; Thank God game 3 is not a dead rubber this year!
Li Na; First Chinese player to claim a grand slam singles title at French Open. So from now on expect frog's legs in your take away flied lice!
Carlton; They could actually be legit!
Richmond; On the rise!
Melbourne Dees; The best answer to copping as ass whooping is to give one out – against a top 8 side!
Geelong; Still unbeaten and Chris Scott could break the record next week with the best winning record streak in his first year! It took a Brissy champion!

This week's losers

Lions; Outclassed and no short term cure!
Qld Maroons; Let’s pop them in cause it probably won’t happen in Lockyer's time again!
Essendon; Chris Scott is taking the honours over Bomber Thompson – who’ll get the last laugh?
Lebron James; Has showed no class at all in defeat!

Catch you next week for Wimbledon and footy updates only on The Newsport!!
