Cash in on Queensland Week
Premier Anna Bligh has commemorated Queensland Day with the launch of the 2012 Queensland Week sponsorship program.
"Last year I introduced the Queensland Week sponsorship program to further encourage Queenslanders to celebrate the week in a way that reflects the unique culture, heritage and aspirations of their own community," the Premier said.
"Community groups and organisations are now encouraged to submit an application to host their own event for Queensland Week 2012, to be held from 2 to 11 June."
Communities can apply for sponsorship support of up to $10,000 per event.
"There was such a great response to last year's program that we have decided to double the amount of funding on offer for events in 2012 to a total of $100,000.
"Queensland Week is such a celebratory time of year for Queenslanders and I encourage the community to submit their ideas for a 2012 Queensland Week event.
"We're looking for imaginative and innovative events that reflect and celebrate what's great about Queensland. This may take the form of a concert, festival, markets, parade, barbeque or something that is unique to your region.
"It's all about engaging your local community and encouraging their involvement in a true Queensland celebration," Ms Bligh said.
Under the 2011 Queensland Week sponsorship program, seven successful applicants contributed to the overall program of Queensland Week events.
"This year we are supporting events in the local communities of Hervey Bay, Cloncurry, Barcaldine, Charters Towers, Woodgate Beach, Boulia and Brisbane.
"These events have truly enriched our Queensland Week celebrations across the State this year and I hope 2012 can be even bigger and better," Ms Bligh said.
