Last call - Road closures this Sunday
If the comments we've been receiving at The Newsport are any indication we're sure you're all aware by now about this Sunday's road closures.
But just in case you've been living under a rock for the past month, motorists are reminded the Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Port Douglas will be closed this Sunday as part of the Cairns Airport Challenge Cairns triathlon.
Signs have been adorning the road between Port Douglas and Cairns for some weeks now, advising the road will be closed between 7am and 4.30pm.
While the finishing touches are being put on the course finish line near the Shangri-La Hotel on Cairns Esplanade, and organisers start preparing the route into Port Douglas, local motorists are making the decision on whether to stay in Port Douglas or venture inland via Mareeba to drive south.
Exemplar Coaches and Limousines owner, Cheryl Wellham, says that while the event is affecting her company, it's being handled with a smile.
"We have been working on individual itineraries for each customer for some time now in preparation for this Sunday's triathlon," she said.
"But this event is bringing 2000 contestants into the region, and they have about 10 support people each, so that's a lot of exposure the region will gain in a positive light. And we have this event for the next five years, so we'd better get used to it."
Meanwhile, boat transfers will be operating between Port Douglas and Cairns on Sunday.
Boats will be leaving Port Douglas (Meridien Marina) for Cairns at 8.45am and 1.45pm, and from Cairns' Reef Fleet Terminal for Port Douglas at 6.30am and 11am.
Cost is $16 adults and $8 for children under the age of 12, and bookings can be made with Great Adventures in Cairns on 4044 9944.
