The sports wrap with Nicky G

What’s wrong with St Kilda? How does a side that nearly won this thing over the past two seasons suddenly become as coach Lyon said this weekend ‘easy to play against’? Has this 17 year old girl seriously messed with their heads or what? I think so.

St Kilda was always a club when i was growing up that found it hard to keep their business in house & after Ross Lyon seemed to have fixed that – there seems to be ‘trust’ issues again!

After one win from 8 rounds they need to find answers quick & if it was this young girls intention to upROOT this club (pun intended) then she is winning.

The big improvers this season so far seem to be Carlton, West Coast & definitely Essendon. Geelong should also take a bow for remaining undefeated. It doesn’t surprise me that the Scott twins are making great coaches as they were such no nonsense tough players.

Filling the back pockets for the great Brisbane trilogy these guys were as reliable & hard at it as you could get & they are now injecting that into their players – Brad with the cash strapped underdog in Nth Melbourne & Chris who’s put fresh legs & re-invigorated a classy Geelong.

But as far as rookie coaches go i have to mention James Hird. Essendon have pulled off a masterstroke in grabbing Hirdy & instead of insisting he does an apprenticeship, stick ex premiership teammate & coaching great Bomber Thompson next to him. It’s working a treat! I bet Brisbane are watching on with extreme jealousy as they work out what to do golden boy Michael Voss. Hindsight is a funny thing.

The basketball season has been over two weeks & the Cairns Taipans have already lost gun recruit Daniel Dillon to the Melbourne Tigers. Here’s a guy the Snakes through a lifeline too as he was a borderline player & now he shows no loyalty. He got a 3 year deal with the Tigers & no doubt the money was not matchable by us. A harsh reality for a club with a tight budget! Maybe we can still hang on to our imports & find another ‘fringy’. It almost took us all the way this season!

This weeks winners;

Geelong (always special to beat the Pies)
Memphis (lost but went within one win from the Western Conference finals – best ever result for the 8th seed)
Chicago Bulls (Keep winning thanks to a guy named Derrick Rose)
West Coast (first local derby win since Mark Harvey became the man in Freo)
Hawks (slowly getting it back together)

This weeks Losers;

Collingwood (winless the last two weeks)
Brisbane (winless all year & hoping for miracles from J Brown)
Port Adelaide (terrible)
St Kilda (Stay clear of 17 year old knickers!)
Daniel Dillon (Good for you but not good for the Taipans)
Shaq Oneill (should have hung up the boots 2 years ago)
Vossy (nothing he has done at the trade table or in the coaches box has worked since round 5 last year – NOTHING!!)
