Whileaway Book Shop and Cafe in Macrossan Street is already well known for its fantastic coffee, but not quite so well known is that a group of literature loving locals gather amongst the books to continiue the much cherished tradition of the Book Club.

Meeting on the last Thursday of each month, the Whileaway Book Club is growing in popularity, and Whileaway's Devra King couldn't be happier.

"We had around 15 people at last month's meeting. It's a diverse group of men and women of varying ages so I have to choose books that aren't just ones that women would like."

This diversity means Book Club members may be reading books they would never normally choose, a situation Devra welcomes to guard against boredom.

"They purchase the book and then have a month to read it. We meet for a coffee and talk about the book, and people can get up and tell us about what they thought of it if they like."

Whileaway Book Club member Ina van Bezoen said she enjoys the experience and loves the different perspectives of the club's members.

"I joined the book club when it started around two years ago. What I love is that it's likely you get to read a book you might not have chosen otherwise. The range of books we get to read is so broad.

"It is interesting that one book can be read and remembered for different reasons. The book 'Room' I thought was torture to read, but others loved it," she said. "Plus it's a great way to meet new people."
