Crocs advance in preseason cup

The Port Douglas Croc's have progressed to the preseason cup grand final after two confidence boosting games at Cazaly's stadium in Cairns on Saturday.

With the Cairns AFL home and away season just around the corner, and a number of players unavailable the Croc's depth was tested, but came away triumphant.

While it was a less experienced Crocs' outfit that took to the field, it was a couple of familiar faces in skipper Evan Hocking and league best and fairest winner Daniel Smith who stood out. Luke Bloom and new recruit Dale Penny were also valuable contributors.

Final scores were:

Port Douglas 5.2.32 def South Cairns 2.7.19

Port Douglas 7.7.49 def Centrals Trinity Beach 1.7.13

Crocs' president Scott Ewert was pleased with the results. "We didn't really expect to win both games Saturday, as we had a lot of players unavailable and we were playing a lot of kids, so a couple of wins was a nice surprise," he said.

"Mark Fletcher is our fitness coach and has done a great job with the boys as he did last year."

Mr Ewert said that it was important supporters made the effort to support the team away from their home ground.

"Although we are renowned to have the best home game supporters it is not the case when the Crocs play away, it would be good if we can improve on that this year with a few supporters getting to the away games.

The Crocs play Cairns Saints at 3pm at Cazaly's this Saturday in the preseason cup grand final. It will be the first time the two teams have played each other since the 2010 grand final in which the Crocs succumbed to the Saints in an upset.

The regular season commences on 2 April with a game against South Cairns.
