Running club at the starting blocks
Port Douglas will soon have its own organised running club and demand for memberships is expected to be strong if recent fun run numbers are anything to go by.
Inspire Fitness' Sarah McConnell is one of the founders of the group which will be incorporated into the long established Cairns Road Runners.
"I've been wanting to do it for ages and we started off doing these Port Douglas fun runs with the intention of starting a running group," Ms McConnell said.
"With the fun runs we've been getting at least 50 people coming to them and all of them have been showing interest saying, yes, we'd love a running group to just join in with runners every week and go on an organised run once a week.
"Nick (Carling, from Actin Fitness) I know has has heaps of interest as well from his client base."
By forming with the Cairns Road Runners there are benefits for both groups with an increased membership base and events calendar.
"They're sick of running around Cairns so they'd be happy to come up and try some new runs in Port," Ms McConnell said.
Lorraine Lawson, president of the Cairns Road Runners which currently has around 150 members, says members of both groups will benefit from the introduction of the Port Douglas running club.
"Everyone just falls under exactly the same banner and gets exactly the same benefits. (The benefit) for us is an increase in membership," she said.
A membership sign on day will be held on Sunday 27 March to coincide with the next planned fun run. More on that to come.
